People
The population of Odessa is about 1.1 million, from all over Russia, Ukraine and in fact the world. It is a very cosmpolitan city with many tourists from all over the world to relax in the summer. The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian of course but you are more likely to hear Russian. And if you ask anybody if they are Russian or Ukrainian, you'll usually hear neither, they are an Odessan.
The people are known for the humor so when you arrive be prepared for a good time! Every year on April 1st people from the ex Soviet Union turn their attention to Odessa to see the festivities and jokes.
Odessa is also known for it's art and culture, having what is widely considered to be the second most beautiful and important
opera house in the world. Many artists, composers, and writers have called Odessa home and this continues to this day.
Of course you cannot forget the girls. The girls of Odessa are known all over for their beauty.

The City
The "Pearl of the Black Sea" was founded in 1794 and held in important role throughout it's history. With it's strategic location on the Black Sea, it has always been an important port of trade and entrance into Ukraine and eastern Europe. This location has made Odessa what it is today. A thriving city influenced by many cultures and welcoming the world to it's streets.
Walking in Odessa you can see it's history from classical Italian influences to Soviet apartmens that line the outskirts of the city. Odessa streets are lined with all kind of trees. Chestnuts and acacias are especially loved here. One of the areas you'll be around the most is Deribovskaya street. Here there are a variety of restaurants, theatres, concerts, and of course people.
And of course you can't forget the beaches, which makes Odessa feel more like the Mediterranean than a Soviet port. All of Odessa is lined with popular beaches, one of the most popular being Arcadia's Beach, which is located about 10 minutes from downtown.
Like all Soviet cities, Odessa was invaded in WWII and suffered greatly. You can see some of this in Odessa's famous catacombs beneath the city.
Walk towards the sea and you'll soon come up to the port of Odessa. This is a very interesting place since ships from all over the world arrive here and people look out at the expanse of the Black Sea.
